The Return to Practice (RTP) course is an online provision, which enables nurses whose Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration has lapsed, to return to registered practice. There are two routes for our RTP programme, employer led and as a direct applicant. Irrespective of the route, the course contents remain the same.
If you are a Practice Educator Facilitator or placement provider, you may need to find out more about how RTP applies to your placement provision or impacts on your staff. I hope to answer any questions you have within this area, but am more than happy to discuss my programme via a teams meeting if required.
The RTP team want to work with you to return more nurses back to registered practice.
On this page you will find
- An overview of our RTP programme
- Return to Field
- Return to dual field
- Return to field and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN)

The RTP programme runs twice per year, in February and September. This is a part-time programme which consists of an eight-week timetable, and the students accessing a placement for a minimum of 150/300 hours in practice depending on which RTP programme the student is following.
RTP is in some instances very bespoke, we work with large organisation to enhance their recruitment options, and smaller organisations to develop their current workforce. If they have an employee working as a Healthcare Assistant who was previously a registered nurse, to return to registered practice within their workplace.
RTP currently offers three routes for returners:
- The return field return
- The return to dual field
- The return to field and SCPHN
