At the University of Brighton, the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care Practice (FdSC) provides a higher apprenticeship pathway for staff currently working in a health or social care setting. Our nursing associate and assistant practitioner apprenticeships will develop knowledge and skills enabling students to progress to an assistant practitioner or nursing associate role.
The course has an applied focus, with practice-based learning making up a high proportion of the qualification, meaning students can apply and consolidate classroom-based knowledge, through practical work.

Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship
The Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship is a 2 year programme, accredited by the Nursing and Midwidery Council. The University of Brighton has both a September and February entry point each academic year. Following the induction, apprentices will have scheduled teaching activities one day a week.
With support from the employer, apprentices are required to spend 20% of paid working hours on studies and be able to evidence this. The FdSC ensures that apprentices receive a wide-ranging, research-informed education and develop the practical skills demanded by employers. In addition, the apprentice experiences four external placements within public and private healthcare organisations across Sussex.

Assistant Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship
Assistant Practitioners attend university one day a week during term time and will continue to have one day per week off-the-job learning out of term.
With support from the employer, apprentices are required to spend 20% of paid working hours on studies and be able to evidence this. This is a statutory requirement for apprenticeships and the funding is conditional on this being met. For those who wish to progress into registered practice, the apprenticeship can provide credits into some Higher Education programmes aligned to professional registration.
