INVITE: End of Year Show at the University of Brighton

Please come along and join the Architecture and Design courses at the University of Brighton at their annual End of Year Show.

Included in the exhibition will be work from: BA(Hons) Architecture, MArch Architecture, BA(Hons) Interior Architecture, BSc(Hons) Product Design, MA Interior Design, MA Sustainable Design and the Architecture and Design Integrated Foundation.

After it internal opening event on Friday 2nd of June, the show will run open and free for one week from Saturday 3rd to Friday 9th of June at the Architecture School, on the 3rd floor of Mithras House. Lewes Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton. Opening times are: 12:00 to 17:00 at the weekend, 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00 to 22:00 on Friday 9th with awards and closing party from 16:00.

This academic year, André Viljoen has been teaching a Master’s studio focusing on Continuous Productive Urban Landscape design research and themed Re-visiting the City. Extracts of the studio brief:

Ludwig Mies van de Rohe famously claimed that ‘architecture belongs to the epoch’ – not even to the time but to the epoch – and that the epoch is the only thing that architecture can express. In our time, and for some time, including Mies’ time, human activity and significantly building, has had a major impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems, leading to what some define as the Anthropocene Epoch, our current time in Earth’s history.

In Re-visiting the City we are going to experiment with an architecture belonging to the Anthropocene Epoch, one that aims to repair some of our negative impacts on the earth and biosphere. We will use a site in the centre of Brighton and Hove, formed by a spine running along Church Street which traverses Brighton’s topography between Valley Gardens to the East and St Nicholas’s Church to the West. […]

Setting your work in a near-future scenario, in transition to a circular economy, we will imagine cities less dominated by the private car, enabling the spaces between buildings to be reconsidered. We will do this by exploring relationships between food-productive landscapes and architecture, using the concept of Continuous Productive Urban Landscape. […]

Landscape will be thought as an urban network, within which we will focus on the design of a new hotel and a supporting food productive landscape. The hotel typology provides the opportunity to explore fundamental architectural questions about repetition and discontinuity, arising from the need to accommodate the most private and the most shared of spaces: bedrooms and ballrooms, a micro-city,within a city renowned as a resort.
