GrunBerlin, Germany

GruneBerlin is a state-owned company delivering green infrastructure throughout Berlin. They operate over 700 hectares of urban open spaces such as ‘squares and parks, tourist guidance systems, sustainable mobility offers, [and] memorials’. With every project they undertake holding a shared goal of ‘to change Berlin in a sustainable way’.

Their projects within Berlin have led to more green transport options and routes throughout the city. The development of the cable car now means there is one more form of green transport in the city and many locals use it for everyday transport. The restoration of the Yorck bridges allows foot and cycle access between Park am Gleisdreieck and Flaschenhals Park which also creates a continuous green landscape. GruneBerlin has also been responsible for the maintenance of the North-South green corridor since 2010. The corridor links various parks and open spaces and forms a section of the Berlin-Leipzig long distance cycle path.

They also manage and develop over 700 hectares of open space and green spaces around the city. The Döberitzer Grünzug is a current project which will be realised over 4.1 hectares. The belt was designed to rebalance the nature of the area after the construction of the nearby B 96 federal highway. Their parks offer more than just places for recreation and relaxation. The Britzer Garten host cultural events and art installations. The Natur park Südgelände was once an industrial wasteland, but now is a cultural hotspot of an area with wild nature throughout. The jury of the Italian Benetton Studies and Research Foundation have described the park as a ‘bridge between ecology, art and urban culture’. Tempelhofer Feld, the site of an old aerodrome, is now a place for leisure, exercise and gardening. The redevelopment of the space will continue with the community having an active participation and say in what they want to see come of it.

GrunBerlin’s projects have delivered greener infrastructure throughout Berlin to create a healthier, happier city, however, if they incorporated food production within the green spaces they manage, then Berlin could be more self-sustainable too.
