The CTSG is delighted to be welcoming Dr Elle Whitcroft to talk about her recent UKRI-funded research project and wellbeing intervention. “We’ve always Been Here” explores what intergenerational LGBTQ+ communities look like and how can we bridge the gap between older and younger LGBTQ+ groups? Elle’s research was designed to encourage LGBTQ+ intergenerational connection using a variety of collage, comics, zines, painting, creative writing, and art talking groups. This practice is designed to capture the complex, shifting, evolving nature of LGBTQ+ identities and histories.

About Elle’s Research

Following Covid-19, many pathways to community have been blocked for older people. Research undertaken by Age UK found that ‘loneliness affects well over a million people’ (2021); loneliness has since been noted as ‘one of our most pressing public health issues’ (2018) and is particularly acute in the older (55+) and younger (18-25) LGBTQ+ population. Similarly, young people, especially LGBTQ+ young people, have been identified as a vulnerable group who struggle with ‘increased loneliness and isolation’ (2020), and they will be the future old. Drawing on arts-based research, and using transformative community-based frameworks, Between LGBTQ+ Generations functions as 1) a pilot wellbeing intervention that builds community, mentorship, and healthy ageing awareness for young people (18-35) and older community members (55+) who identify as LGBTQ+ 2) research-based art project that uses creative methods to connect and support LGBTQ+ intergenerational engagement.
