The Centre for Transforming Sexuality & Gender are pleased to announce our annual LGBTQ+ undergraduate dissertation / project prize. This will be the prize’s twelfth year, with an award of £150 for the winning entry. The deadline for nominations is June 21st 2024.

 

Eligibility

Any final year undergraduate dissertation / project, submitted to any school or course at the University, is eligible for nomination if it a) is focused on a topic relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer issues or scholarship, b) was submitted no later than June 7th 2024, and c) has been marked and awarded a 2:1 grade or higher. Entries can be nominated by staff or by students. Please contact prize panel leader Dr Nick McGlynn (n.mcglynn2@brighton.ac.uk) if you have any questions about eligibility.

 

How the prize is judged

The panel do not re-mark or grade entries as module assessments. Instead they judge entries by three criteria:

  • Originality and innovation of topic and/or methodology;
  • Commitment to improving LGBTQ+ lives;
  • Potential to positively influence policy and/or practice.

 

How to nominate an entry

To nominate, please send an email entitled ‘PRIZE NOMINATION 2024 – <name of student>’ to  sexgencentre@brighton.ac.uk

The email should include:

  • an introduction to the dissertation / project that explains why you are nominating it (200 words max);
  • the full name and email address of the student;
  • an attached copy of the nominated dissertation / project as .docx or .pdf (for written entries), .jpeg, .pdf or .png (for image entries) or .mp4 or .mov (for video entries). If you are not able to provide your entry in these formats, please contact us for advice. Alternatively you can send a hard copy of any entry material to the prize panel leader at the following address:c/o Dr Nick McGlynn, School of Applied Sciences, University of Brighton – Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GJ
  • an attached copy of the evaluation of the dissertation / project by markers, including the awarded mark or grade.

 

The deadline for nominations is Friday June 21st, 2024.

 

The panel will announce their decision in late summer and will communicate via an email to the nominator and to the student.
