Looking to the future
Since 2008, volunteers from the UK (via the University of Brighton’s charitable status) and Sweden (via it’s charitable organisation, Trinity) have made make equal contributions to meet the running costs of the Malagiri School.
Both groups share an enduring vision to ‘take local families from lack of education….to opportunities for change and hope for the future.’
Since the inception of this project much has changed – the School has expanded and flourished: it now accommodates over 60 children in four classes and has become the beating heart of the local community. The children enjoy an interesting and varied curriculum, informed by Montessori principles. More recently, and in response to new government rules, the School has been registered as a Public Trust School. Consequently, Swedish and UK support is now focused on enabling the School to secure greater involvement from the local community so that, in the longer term, more responsibility can be taken for its financial management. These changes come at a point when the University of Brighton’s charitable activities will focus solely on raising funds that have a direct impact on their students, including, for example: helping students who are undergoing financial hardship; and offering scholarships in recognition of specific talents.
The UK and Sweden see these changes as an opportunity to merge both groups. This will enable the partnership to strengthen, create stronger decision making, and thus provide more focused and aligned on-going support for Malagiri. After July 2025, it will no longer be possible to donate via the JustGiving site. UK donors can continue to give their much-needed donations, by making contributions via Trinity’s charitable organisation.
A Message from Andy Davies (Deputy Dean, School of Education, Sport and Health Sciences)
“This School has a profound impact in and beyond the Malagiri village: it generates local employment opportunities; raises expectations and aspirations for young people – especially girls; and offers prospects for those children who experience exceptional challenges.
“Over the years, more than 70 university students have visited the School, enabling them to develop a unique understanding of international and development education, thus enriching their professional practice and informing their academic work. I would particularly like to acknowledge the contribution of School of Education staff and students, who together with the substantial support of wider university staff, and friends of Malagiri, have raised over £200,000 – making it possible for the School to thrive.
“There is no doubt that this generosity has transformed the life chances of so many children.”
Future Support for Malagiri
From August 2025, please make donations via our sister charity, Trinity.
This organisation, founded in 2008, has charitable status (registration number 802442-0823) and has sponsored the Malagiri School jointly with the University of Brighton. To oversee and ensure the continued development of the school, Trinity members visit Malagiri at least once a year to demonstrate interest, learn from mutual experiences and support the staff hands on.
Trinity ensures that all donations benefit the School in the best possible way and that it offers an inclusive, creative curriculum. Donations can be made by bank transfer using the following information:
