Pride Events at a Crossroads: Activism, Community-Building and Conflicts from the Local to the Global

Focusing on the findings discussed in the recently published book “The Politics of Pride Events” (2025, Bristol University Press), this seminar addresses the shifting global meanings of Pride Events, which intersect with local challenges, histories, and activist practices across different latitudes. The presentation will discuss the main challenges faced by Pride organisers at a global level, particularly against the backdrop of the ongoing hostility towards LGBTQIA+ persons, the role of corporations, the existence of internal fractures within LGBTQIA+ circles which often lead to the emergence of “Alternative Pride Events”, as well as emerging challenges relating to disability justice and environmental sustainability.

In the presentation, I will be introducing the concept, advanced in the book, of “Kaleidoscope Modernities” as a critical conceptualisation of Pride Events as an ideal(ised) site of global cosmopolitan LGBTQIA+ politics that often reproduces exceptionalising narratives about progress and modernity firmly centred in Western- centric conceptions of LGBTQIA+ activism, limiting our ability to image sexual and gender diversity, and connected forms of resistance, in a plural, open-ended, and decolonial perspective.
