The CTSG is proud to have joined colleagues from across the UK Gender Studies community in a published community roundtable on Transgender equality and the UK Supreme Court (Journal of Gender Studies). This timely exchange highlights the importance of collective reflection and action in protecting and advancing trans rights and gender equality. Huge thanks to Alison Phipps 🇵🇸 and Rachel Alsop for bringing this important conversation together.
You can read out statement below:
As a centre with a long history of research and advocacy by, with, and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and asexual communities, we wanted to reaffirm this commitment. Supporting trans, non-binary, and intersex (TNBI) people does not threaten the rights and well-being of cisgender people, but in fact strengthens them – through collective resistance to rigid gender norms that constrain and harm many cisgender individuals as well. At a time when trans communities are being vilified and legislated against, neutrality is not an option; silence risks complicity in the escalation of anti-trans rhetoric and action in the UK and globally.
