In collaboration with CAPPE, the Populism Specialist Group of the Political Studies Association held its sixth annual workshop in Brighton on 22-23 September, 2022. This was the first in-person workshop held since 2019, although the post-pandemic developments meant that the hybrid format was adopted with online participants from India, Portugal and Spain. This international diversity was replicated by the attendees in Brighton coming from afar afield as Chile, Cyprus, Germany, Belgium and Spain. The workshop featured cutting-edge research in the methodology, theory, history and wide empirical practice of populism across the globe, turning to new lenses through which to analyse emerging phenomena, exemplified by the keynote delivered by Oscar Agustin examining the spatiality of populism. The other keynote provided an in-depth investigation of the dynamics between performance, ideologies and mediation through the case studies of the Economic Freedom Fighters in South Africa and UKIP. The workshop cemented the reputations of CAPPE and the Populism Specialist Group as leading the field in the diverse array of issues and case studies that populism and its study generates and regenerates.
