Students travelling to placement – you may be eligible for help with the cost of travel

This is important information for teaching and health science students travelling to placement who are eligible to receive extra financial support to help pay for travel.

Are you a Health Science student, who started your course on or after 1st August 2017? Midwifery, Nursing Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry.

Are you receiving funding through Student Finance England?

You may be eligible to receive some reimbursement of your travel expenses to placement.

You apply for this through the NHS Learning Support Fund.

You’ll need to create an online account and then follow the instructions for the student journey to action your claim. All claims are checked by the school office who then it submit it to the NHS on your behalf.

You can submit a claim up to 9 months after the end of your placement but we recommend you submit your expenses regularly to keep on top of them, so make it part of your routine on a fortnightly or monthly basis and keep all of your receipts

Please note – the school office may send these off in batches so check with them first.

Trainee Teachers – The School of Education can make a contribution towards additional travel costs incurred while on school-based training.

Both the university and the trainee (ie you) make a contribution to expenses incurred. Trainees must pay the first £3.00 (or more, depending on the distance and cost of travel between your term-time address and the university).

Collect a claim form from the Partnership Office, Room A308 Checkland Building, Falmer campus.

Check this flowchart to assess whether or not you are eligible.
