Physical Education PGCE

Trainees undertaking the Physical Education route develop a personal rationale for their subject’s inclusion in the secondary curriculum and engage critically with crucial subject specific debates and key pedagogies in an informed manner.

They consider what good teaching and learning looks like in Physical Education and plan individual lessons and units of work/series of lessons that include learning objectives and outcomes, adapted teaching, inclusion, appropriate resources, literacy and numeracy skills, pupil progress and assessment for learning.

Subject knowledge is developed throughout the programme using strategies such as an ongoing subject audit, micro-teaching and subject knowledge development days with active involvement with partnership secondary schools.  There are opportunities for involvement with the Association for Physical Education (AfPE) seminars, conferences and exhibitions; access to professional development opportunities such as The FA level 1 Teachers Award and Trampolining Teachers Award during their PGCE year.

Trainees develop a high level of subject expertise in teaching Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming, Athletics and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities as well as teaching accredited forms of Physical Education in order to become strong and effective subject specialists who know and understand their subject well and can teach confidently and creatively.

To support mentorship and reduce mentor and trainee workload, we have a bespoke subject specific set of resources which creates a one-stop-shop for forms, SBT specific mentor training and updates; these pages are sent direct to mentors prior to the start of each SBT.
