Populisms in Brazil: the cases of Bolsonaro and Lula

Brazil is a complex country full of particularities. In this century, it experienced one of the greatest social advances in its history during the first decade, followed by the rise of a new right wing – not so new – that came to dominate national politics. This seminar traces a chronological line of political events in Brazil from the 2000s onwards, highlighting the political emergence of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a left-wing populist leader, and Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right populist leader, to present Brazilian politics and reflect a little on the populisms of Latin America and the world.
