Student Advice Service – Money Matters

News from the Student Advice Service at the University of Brighton

BEWARE gov.uk ‘Covid-19 Relieve’ is a scam

For anyone checking gov.uk for updates about government advice or support, please check on the https://www.gov.uk/ link direct. Try to avoid clicking on links via text or social media (including this one, for the time being!)

Unfortunately, there are a number of scams doing the rounds asking you to disclose your bank details in order to receive some financial benefit. These are fake websites and they will copy your bank details or extract money from your account direct, so please be extra vigilant at this time.

If you aren’t sure, please email Student Advice studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk and we can check for you, or you can contact the organisation direct to see if the offer is genuine.

The charity Full Fact is an excellent source of good advice and checking service.

If you get any scams of phishing emails, please report them to Action Fraud, which is run by the police.

Sadly it was only a matter of time before ‘professional’ scammers were going to take the opportunity to prey on people at their most vulnerable during these challenging times, so take your time and read emails, texts, social media posts very carefully.

Best wishes everyone
