Money Week blog of the day – have a night out that doesn’t blow the budget

Having a night out doesn’t have to cost the earth and if you’re living somewhere new, there may be free or cheap fun just around the corner which you didn’t even know about. Or you may want to visit friends and fancy doing soemthing different. Here’s a few suggestions to get you on your way…………

Stay connected with all the SU events by regularly checking their online calendar. Societies such as International Students’ Society (InterSoc) regularly holds events which are open to all students.

Fancy yourself as a bit of a cinephile? Make sure you get the best price tickets. Picture House cinema student membership costs £20 it can be used at Duke of York at Komedia, Duke of York at Preston Circus and generous discounts at Picturehouse cinemas nationwide as well as E4 Slackers. It also offers some good food deals nearby, so keep your card on you in you’re planning  abite to eat before or after. The Odeon chain (Brighton and Hastings) also has student offers.

The university sometimes has free film screenings with added Q&A session at both Hastings and Grand Parade, so keep an eye on social media feeds for these campuses as you may need to register in advance. You can also join Brighton and Sussex Social Movie Club if you want to get involved in other film related fun and meet new people.

Local cinema in Hastings, the Electric Palace offers a student discount and has unusual events throughout the year which sometimes attract additional discounts.

If live music is more your thing, venues like the Hope and Ruin, Quadrant, Sticky Mike’s and Green Door Store and Latest Music Bar in Brighton often have cheap gigs or have a browse on Last Minute.

Hastings and St Leonards also have a quirky arts and music scene so have a look at venue posters and notice boards to see what’s on. Pubs like the Carlisle list gigs well in advance. There is a wide array of small festivals happening across Sussex where you enjoy different music, comedy, beer and cider right on your doorstep.

There’s plenty of local comedy too, ranging from budget laughs to the arena style A listers.                                              ND5_2923_Lr-edit

Komedia in Brighton has a good student deal, but you need to book in advance. Caroline of Brunswick (an alternative pub interestingly and aptly named after former local social outcast married to King George 1V) has a popular comedy night, sometimes free. In Eastbourne, thebestof Eastbourne lists free and cheap events and there’s also Eastbourne Comedy club, which is more pricey.

Brighton hosts a fabulous festival throughout May each year where you’ll find an huge and much varied mix of entertainment opportunities, much of it free. There is the standard Brighton Festival programme and also the Brighton Fringe. Both have paying and free events all across the citry and beyond. You can pick up a programme for each, or search online and each year the event is curated by a different guest director. Listings open next week.

And for those with more of an eclectic reach, equally for the budding perf0rmer – whether a poet, comedian or musician, try an open mic night – Whistle Trago (Hastings), Quadrant (Brighton).

For those of you looking for the festival thrill, apply early for Great Escape for saver tickets and for a more enduring experience for those with staying power, apply for a volunteering role at a summer festival through Festaff for the big time events.

As you can see, the opportunites are endless…………………

Have a fabulous weekend and we hope you’ve enjoyed National Student Money Week. Don’t forget to enter the cooking competition. You can add your pics on instgram and tell the world.
