Apply now for postgraduate funding

The Student Finance application process is now open for students starting  a Master’s or Doctoral course in 24/25 academic year. You can find out more about what may be available to you here.

If you are already on your Master’s course and applied for funding last year, then you don’t need to apply again because your loan will just roll over to the next year.

If you started a Master’s course last year and did not apply for funding from Student Finance England, but now want to, you can apply now, but should apply for the year you started the course in  – using a paper form available here.

How much you’ll get

Students starting a full Master’s degree in 24/25 can get a loan of up to £12,471 from Student Finance England to help towards the cost of their fees for the entire course – this is not a yearly amount. The loan will not cover both your fees and living costs, so you will need to have additional income to study a Master’s course.

Those students starting a Doctoral course can access a loan of up to £29,390 towards the costs of their entire PhD studies, so students will need to have an additional source of income.

Disabled Student’s Allowance is also available to students who receive funding from Student Finance to study Master’s or PhD courses.

Please be aware that if you are receiving funding such as bursaries from other sources, you may not be eligible for a postgraduate loan, and there are many other conditions also.  Check out who is eligible here.

Welsh domiciled Master’s students could access a loan of up to £18,950 from Student Finance Wales for the entire course, and those studying a PhD course can access a loan of up to £28,655.  Those students who receive their funding from Student Finance Wales can get further information about eligibility here.

How to apply

If you have applied for undergraduate funding in the past, you can use your online account to apply – there should be an option called Postgraduate Funding which will open up the Master’s loan option.

Remember, the Postgraduate loan is only available for students taking a full 180 credit Master’s course from the beginning, and is not available to students who are studying on a PGDip or PGCert.

Students who will be starting a PGCE should apply for Undergraduate funding, and those students moving directly up to the Master’s year of their integrated Master’s courses should also continue to apply for undergraduate funding.

And don’t forget, students who have completed their undergraduate degree at the University of Brighton may get a discount on their Postgraduate fees in the first year of study through the Alumni Postgraduate Scholarship.

If you are not sure what funding to apply for, please contact the Student Advice Service and we will be happy to advise you.
