How and when the Maintenance Loan is paid
Most new and continuing students who applied for their funding in good time should have been assessed and able to see a status update on their Student Finance account.
Student Finance use different terms to describe the status of funding applications/assessments. Let us tell you what the different options mean:
Awaiting confirmation – this means that Student Finance is waiting for the university to tell them that you’re enrolled and engaging in the course.
Please note that this won’t happen until after Monday 27th September (or when your course actually starts) and you must be fully enrolled on the course for this to work successfully. You may have to wait until 29th September or later to receive your first instalment.
If you see the term ‘Awaiting attendance confirmation’ next to the Tuition Fee Loan element, this is perfectly normal and will not affect your Maintenance Loan payments. We don’t collect Tuition Fee Loan payments until later in the term so this will subsequently change to ‘Paid’ in November. And remember, the Tuition Fee Loan is paid direct to the university, not to you.
Scheduled – this means that Student Finance has all the information they need from you and your loan has been approved for payment.
Payment in progress – payment is on its way. It usually takes up to 3 working days to reach your bank account.
Blocked – this usually means that you either need to submit your bank details in order to receive the Maintenance Loan, or your National Insurance number is being verified. It can take up to 2 weeks to check National Insurance numbers.
However, it can also mean that the Tuition Fee Loan has been withheld this academic year due to previous study, so please get in touch if you know that this applies to you.
Failed – this means that unfortunately the payment was returned to Student Finance. Please check your bank details urgently.
Paid – this is what everyone wants to read!
