Increase to rail fares including Unizone and planned industrial action on Monday 8th January

Talkative trains Éole Wind via Compfight

As you may already be aware, the cost of rail travel increased on Monday 2nd January. This is across the local network and further afield. This includes the Southern Unizone fares as follows:

Weekly: £17.40

Monthly: £66.80

Quarterly: £200.40 – you can tweak the exact dates to suit each term

As a result of this, we may see more On Board Supervisors checking tickets and railcards on the trains and this is likely to extend to ticket inspectors at stations with no automatic barriers, so make sure you always have a valid ticket.

If you are purchasing a Unizone ticket, you need a uni card and a 16 – 25 Railcard. If you are a mature student over 25, you need to have the 16 – 25 railcard application endorsed by the university, ie we need to confirm you are enrolled on a full time course (this includes students repeating on a part time basis). You can request this at any Student Information Desk across all campuses.

If you use the Unizone ticket, you should carry your student id and the 16 – 25 railcard with you whenever you travel. You could be charged a penalty fare if you do not have all of these items with you.

RMT strike – Monday 8th January

We know that some local services will not be running: https://www.southernrailway.com/travel-information/plan-your-journey/dispute but do check Southern or National Rail journey planner to find the latest information before you travel.
