Money Week theme of the day is………………
Healthy eating on a budget can be tasty, easy and fun
In 3 simple steps you can plan, prepare and enjoy some enjoyable meals and (hopefully) have some leftovers to save in the freezer for a rainy day. The meals that you’ve prepared from scratch will usually taste better and fill you up for longer, without being packed of hidden sugar, salt and fat.
Step 1 – the shopping list.
Before you go food shopping, make a list and try to stick to it. Ideally you should go shopping with your friends and housemates as you can save by buying your essentials in bulk. Try to have an idea of what you’re going to cook for the week ahead as this can help you shop accordingly. The savvy chefs out there may know which fruit and veg are in season and where the best deals are that week, helping the pennies stretch that bit further.
Step 2 – the prep
There’s no shame in following a recipe. After all, TV chefs have made a fortune in writing them! A recipe will not only give you the exact amounts of ingredients needed but also give you an indication how long a meal will take to prepare, so bear in mind what activities you’ve got lined up as you don’t want to get to 9pm knowing you’ve got a white sauce to conquer for that lasagne you’ve been promising your housemates all week. Once you’ve got the basics covered you can add your own twist or add and take things away depending on what you’ve got in the cupboard.
Step 3 – enjoy
Cooking and eating together can be more fun, cheap and you can learn new recipes from each other.
Having a night in can be just as enjoyable as having a night out, especially where everyone brings a dish to share.
Challenge yourselves to experiment with new ingredients, herbs and spices. Kidney beans can be very versatile
