Our course has been recently re-validated and updated to align with the International Union of Health Promotion & Education core competencies. We now offer four pathways through the MSc Health Promotion leading to four named awards in

• Health Promotion,
• Health Promotion & Management,
• Health Promotion & Education
• International Health Promotion.

The course is modular and designed to allow students to follow different pathways of study according to their particular area of interest and experience. Students on all pathways take two or three core Health Promotion modules in the first year, studying alongside other health promotion students and developing a collegiate experience’ thereafter students choose modules from across our inter-professional Post Graduate Academic Programme (www.brighton.ac.uk/hss). The Course Leader assists students in selecting a pathway and modules to ensure the study programme meets personal and professional needs and aspirations.

Which pathway?

All pathways cover the key elements of health promotion for public health practice. Global issues are considered throughout the course, however, students on the International Health Promotion award take a specific ‘cross cultural’ or ‘global health’-focused module, a community placement in a country other than the student’s own (for students from outside the UK the placement is typically within a local health promotion facility in England), and the dissertation is expected to take an international perspective.

Students on the  ‘& Management’ or ‘& Education’ routes take fewer health modules, and instead taking 3 management or 3 education modules, so these routes are not suitable for those without prior health promotion experience.

Destinations of recent students.

• Local Public Health commissioning team
• Local public or environmental health project lead
• Student or college health and welfare coordinator
• NGO project implementation or coordination
• Setting up innovative community projects, eg urban gardens
• Returning to existing health roles, but with increased focus or scope to initiate health promotion projects within their role
• Sexual health and/or young persons health and welfare

Full time UK based students often find employment in public health delivery during the course and shift to part time study to complete the MS
