School of Law welcomes guest professor from Canada

This summer, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ibironke Odumosu-Ayanu, a Canadian Law Professor from the University of Saskatchewan, to shadow Dr. Adaeze Okoye, course leader for our postgraduate law degrees, and collaborate on research.

In this blog, Ronke shares her experience at the University of Brighton, and the importance of her visit.

Why did you choose to visit the University of Brighton?

“This process began with an invitation from Dr. Adaeze Okoye to collaborate on research. The invitation was timely as I was going to be on a sabbatical leave at my institution – the University of Saskatchewan. I decided to spend part of my sabbatical leave as a visiting research fellow at the University of Brighton.”

Tell us more about how you spent your time?

“I had the opportunity to visit parts of the university including Elm House, Mithras House, and Cockcroft Building. While I spent most of my time at Elm House, which is the location of the School of Business and Law, I also attended a postgraduate research seminar at Mithras House which focused on research methods, a subject that is pertinent to postgraduate students working in different areas.”

“In another meeting, we discussed comparative corporate law featuring jurisdictions such as Canada, England, and Nigeria. We shared ideas about corporate law in our respective jurisdictions and outlined insights from the laws and practices of other countries.

“I really appreciated the opportunity of being able to meet some of the PHD students and lecturers from the University of Brighton.”

Research and Collaboration

“My visit provided several opportunities to learn about research being conducted at Brighton and to share insights from my work and my university.

“Visiting Brighton allowed me to experience some of the institutional culture of the University of Brighton and to learn about research and postgraduate experiences that may be different from what occurs at my university.

“A major highlight of the visit was the time it allowed me to spend with my host, Dr. Adaeze Okoye. In this time, we were able to outline a short to medium-term collaborative research agenda and partnership”.

Dr. Adaeze Okoye said:

“It was a great opportunity to host Professor Ibironke at the University of Brighton, School of Business and Law. The students benefitted from her experience in teaching and research across international settings, including at her current Canadian University. There was relevant dialogue and feedback on the student journey and research.

“She has expressed a continuing interest and engagement with the school and also with the law, society and justice research excellence group (Lawsojust REG). We are planning further collaborative research projects .”
