Achieving Distinction: A Milestone in My First Year of Marketing Management
Meet Jood Al Otaibi, who is currently studying our Marketing Management BSc. We caught up with Jood, after she achieved an overall distinction in her first year, as she reflects on her time studying at Brighton so far.
Why did you choose to study marketing at Brighton?
What attracted me at first, which is the case for most people, is the seafront, colourful and vibrant city, and the thousands of activities all year round! What made me sure this University and course were the perfect fit for me, however, is its strong focus on practical learning and industry connections. The course offers a blend of marketing theories and real-world applications, which I found very appealing. In addition, the course is Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing showing the credibility of the course.
How did you find settling into your first year at university? What support did you receive to feel welcome?
Settling into a new place is daunting for almost everyone, but especially for an international student like myself. However, the University of Brighton made the transition much smoother. The international office offered great support, organising orientation events that helped me get familiar with the campus and meet other international students. My academic tutor was also very approachable, offering guidance not only for my studies but also helping me adapt to university life. Additionally, the “Belong at Brighton” lectures that the university offers have introduced me to an array of different people, establishing a community and belonging, which made my first year much more enjoyable.
Tell us about some of the modules you studied in your first year – what was your favourite?
In my first year, I studied modules such as The Professional Marketing Practitioner, Understanding Markets and Consumers, Digital and Social Media Marketing, Marketing Principles, Management Accounting for Marketers, and Business Economics. My favourite module was Marketing Principles, where I achieved my highest grade (80%). This module gave me a solid foundation in the core concepts of marketing, from segmentation and targeting to brand positioning. I particularly enjoyed how it combined theoretical knowledge with real-world case studies, allowing me to apply what I learned to practical scenarios.
Did you attend any special workshops or events? What skills and knowledge did you gain from these experiences?
Yes, I attended a range of workshops, including career-building sessions and digital marketing workshops organised by the university. These workshops helped me improve my understanding of current marketing tools and trends, such as SEO strategies and the use of social media in campaigns. I also gained practical skills in networking and how to present myself professionally, which has been incredibly helpful during my job applications and interviews.
Did you join any societies, and how do they add value to your learning?
I am proudly part of the Arab Society, Marketing Society, and Climbing Society. All of these have helped me both mentally and physically to perform my best in and out of my studies. The Arab Society allowed me to connect with people who share similar cultural backgrounds, making me feel more at home. The Marketing Society helped me stay updated on industry trends and network with professionals. Through the Climbing Society, I found a physical outlet for stress, which has helped me maintain balance and stay focused during my academic work.
How did you achieve a distinction at the end of your first year? How does this feel?
Achieving a distinction at the end of my first year was incredibly rewarding. It was the result of dedication, time management, and consistently engaging with the materials. I made it a point to attend all lectures, actively participate in seminars, and regularly review my notes. The support from tutors and classmates also played a significant role in motivating me. It feels amazing to see my hard work pay off, and it has inspired me to continue pushing myself further in my studies. Although academic achievements are significant, my absolute passion for marketing is what will drive me to excel in this major. I see it as a purposeful and versatile vocation. My objective is to gain high academic achievements and then to work my way up in the field, establishing a reputation until I can create my own marketing agency one day!
What are you looking forward to most in your second year at university?
I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge in more specialised areas of marketing, particularly PR launches and campaigns, as I am passionate about the creativity and strategy involved in these areas. I’m also excited to take on more project-based assignments, where I can apply what I’ve learned in real-world scenarios. Additionally, I’m eager to build on the friendships and networks I made in my first year and continue to explore new opportunities for growth, both academically and personally.
Do you have any advice or tips for anyone thinking about studying a marketing degree?
My advice would be to go to every lecture, as consistency really pays off. Join a society that interests you, whether it’s related to your course or just something fun, as it helps you stay balanced. Do a sport or something physical to keep your mind sharp, and always prioritise your studies, especially during exam seasons. Make friends with the lecturers, and always have a smile on your face. Networking is key in marketing, so make use of any opportunity to connect with peers and industry professionals!
