Top reasons to study a Law degree at the University of Brighton
Choosing the right university for you is important when considering studying for a law degree.
Whilst traditionally, the university you studied at would influence the main ‘big 5’ law firms, in today’s competitive market, recruitment policies are being updated and contextual recruitment tools used to increase the diversity of their intake, making it a more level playing field for all.
We pride ourselves on the fact that Brighton Law School provides a variety of innovative and practically orientated courses. Whilst you will still study the core modules of law, we also offer the opportunity to explore non-traditional pathways, making our graduates well-rounded candidates.
Here’s why we think the University of Brighton is a great place to study a law degree:
- Recognised by the Bar Standards Board as ‘Qualifying Law Degrees’ – All our law degrees also cover the foundations of legal knowledge required to satisfy the academic stage of training for barristers.
- Provide a solid foundation of legal knowledge for aspiring solicitors – Each of our law degrees cover the subject areas assessed in the Solicitor’s Qualifying Examination (SQE) in core and optional modules.
- Gain hands on experience – Practical legal experience is embedded in all of our courses, and we offer extracurricular opportunities to gain Qualifying Work Experience. In addition to this, you’ll have the opportunity to take a year-long paid placement where you can apply your learning, build your work experience, life skills and network.
- Learn from the experts – You’ll learn from brilliant and inspirational academic staff whose teaching reflects the school’s academic and legal interests. Our lecturers come from a range of professional backgrounds – in academia, legal practice, corporate law, the Home Office, the United Nations, and charitable organisations – and they bring this real-world experience and practice into the classroom.
- Practical approaches to teaching and assessment – Brighton Law School is renowned for its ‘no exam’ policy, creating an environment in which you will excel and develop skills rather than just regurgitate information in a set time period. All our assessments focus on you learning the law and applying it in practical ways.
- Supporting your employability – We help to prepare you for practice through additional programmes, including negotiation, client interviewing, law guardians’ scheme and a legal clinic to ensure you will be in a good position to embark on a legal career upon graduating.
- Thriving law societies – get involved in extracurricular activities by attending workshops, and networking with other like-minded students and guest speakers. You’ll also be able to take part in socials, trips and competitions to help build confidence and adversarial skills that are increasingly essential in any career path in the legal sector.
- Diversity and inclusion – Brighton Law School is a supportive environment where students feel able to be themselves and bring their creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm for law to class.
When asked about what to consider when thinking about studying a law degree, admissions tutor, Dr Kate Fernandez, FHEA says:
“I think it’s important to be realistic. It is so competitive now for training contracts, particularly since the introduction of the SQE, that an undergraduate degree at any institution is sometimes not enough. Firms want work experience and/or a masters qualification.
“A law degree at the University of Brighton enables our students to develop the practical skills that employers are looking for and we have good connections with local law firms to foster that relationship so students can apply for work experience.”
