Guest lectures for students on topical legal and social issues
In the last few years our Law, Society and Justice Research and Enterprise Group (LawSoJust REG) hosted a number of guest lectures for students and staff across the University of Brighton.
LawSoJust REG brings together academics and student researchers from law and other related social science disciplines who are active in the fields of social justice and accountability.
The group arranged for a number of guest speakers from other universities around the country to talk about a range of topical social and legal issues including sustainability, justice and human rights protection.
Talks like these are really valuable as they help our students and staff view issues from a different perspective, which is particularly important for the university’s research network.
Here is a summary of the LawSoJust REG’s events last year:
Dr Adriana Consorte-McCrea from Canterbury University gave a talk on social and environmental justice in the context of exploitative pasts and a more sustainable future.
Dr Ellen Gordon-Bouvier from Oxford Brookes University spoke on vulnerability, justice and family.
Professor Conor Gearty QC from the London School of Economics joined us to talk about the role of judges.
Professor Charlotte Villiers from the University of Bristol explored human rights protection and the problem with corporate power.
Prof James Goudkamp from the University of Oxford also visited to speak to our students and staff about writing for publications.
LawSoJust REG looks at issues from a socio-legal perspective, exploring the relationship between law and justice. Led by Dr Adaeze Okoye, the group examines national and international legal and social issues, such as racial inequality, modern slavery, hate crime, indefinite detention, corporate accountability and governance, plus comparative international law and human rights.
