How to Create A Simple Animated GIF in Photoshop

In this video, I explain how to make an animated GIF in Photoshop, using a simple logo. I’ll cover creating GIFs from photos and more advanced details about optimising GIFs in a follow-up video.

GIFs are still very popular on the web due to their frame animation feature. You can create GIFs from vectors, text and photos.

(It’s important to note that GIFs made from photos will be larger and you may need to sacrifice the quality of the image when creating a GIF animation.)

Key points to remember when optimising your GIFs:

  1. Put each element of the GIF you want to animate on a separate layer.
  2. Set the animation to play ‘Forever’ in the Timeline palette so it continuously loops.
  3. More frames in the GIF = higher file size so be concise with your frames.
  4. When saving, the number of colours you choose for the GIF will affect its file size. More colours = better quality + higher file size.
  5. You can experiment with making your GIFs smaller using a tool such as EZGIF.com
