Architectural drawing

Graduates 2022: Isla Wilson: Architecture BA(Hons)

Tutors come with a wealth of industry experience with many continuing to work part-time while teaching, meaning they can give accurate, up-to-date information into real time constructions, which relate to our own ideas.

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

My design work has focused mainly on housing and how we move from the city to our front door. Thresholds form the main design focus for much of my work, highlighting the importance of public/private divides and how these thresholds impact how a space feels. I have aimed to make my work interesting and challenge the traditional layouts of homes with one design project leading to me explore how the semi-detached home can be divided horizontally.

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

Brighton uni provides a great place to study architecture. Brighton puts a real emphasis on teaching you the strong foundations in first year, teaching us the importance of hand drawing and understanding the ‘language of architecture’ through drawing techniques. Tutors come with a wealth of industry experience with many continuing to work part-time while teaching, meaning they can give accurate, up-to-date information into real time constructions, which relate to our own ideas. A strong focus on current climate issues is integrated into the course (such as the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge) enabling us to prepare for the challenges we may face in Practice and how we may respond.

Like all Universities, Brighton faced the disruptions to in-person teaching that the pandemic brought. I feel teaching was not only successfully adapted to the new way of working, but was done so in a considerate way, with student opinions and concerns taken into consideration as we returned back to in-person teaching. Pastoral support at Brighton is excellent and is readily available with each school having an allocated Student Support and Guidance Tutor.

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Architecture?

Architecture always appealed to me as it combined my passions for Art and Maths. It is the ideal course for anyone wanting a degree which is structured but also has a creative outlet. I have always been interested in our built environment, especially historic buildings, and this course provided an opportunity to gain the skills needed to take this passion further into a career.

What are your plans after graduation?

Upon graduation I hope to have successfully completed my Part One, enabling me to enter a year out placement before continuing my studies. I aim to keep developing the knowledge gained on this course, to further develop my skills as I progress into my career.
