Join our LGBTQ+ History Month events
February is LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to celebrate and remember the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities. Join us in connecting, reflecting, and working together to build a safer, more inclusive future. Don’t miss our diverse events throughout February – let’s stand together in celebration.
- Flagship event – screening of a unique documentary which all University staff and students can attend for free (22 February, 7:40pm): Our Equality team have collaborated with local, independent White Wall Cinema, securing a documentary called “The Celluloid Closet”. It explores the history of queer characters in movie and television, underrepresentation and the media’s relationship with LGBTQ+ characters over time. - Community event 4 February, 6pm – 10pm: “From Gay Day to Pride: LGBT History Month Supper Club”. Talk by University of Brighton’s own Alf Le Flohic about the Sussex Gay Liberation Front.
- The New Black Film Collective in partnership with the University of Brighton Donor Research 14 February, 7:30pm: presenting a screening of ‘Pretty Red Dress’ with Q&A and drag performance. Book your tickets now.
- Guided tour of Brighton’s historical LGBTQ+ spaces 19 February, 2:30pm – 4pm)– This 90 minute guided walk around central Brighton will introduce you to the oldest and the newest LGBTQ spaces in the city. No booking required. Find out more.
- 26th Lesbian Lives conference 22-23 March facilitated by the University’s Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender (CTSG) with our partners.

Recognising LGBTQ+ History Month allows us to uncover hidden histories, helping us understand the origins of existing rights and highlighting areas where rights are still lacking. Whether allies or members of the LGBTQ+ community, our collective stance makes a meaningful impact.
