Insights from Architecture and Urban Design Graduates at Brighton

Choosing the right place to study is a big decision, one that shapes both career and personal growth. For graduates of the MA in Architecture and Urban Design (MAAUD) at the University of Brighton, the experience was not just about education—it was about discovery, collaboration, and transformation.

From tackling real-world urban challenges to finding inspiration in unexpected places, we spoke to alumni about their journeys through the course, the impact it had on their careers, and what Brighton means to them now.

A city that feels like home

For many students, Brighton’s unique character played a significant role in their decision to study here. The vibrant, multicultural environment was a welcoming backdrop for both professional and personal development.

“Brighton didn’t make me feel like an alien because it’s a place where different cultures come together, accepting and celebrating each other. The city offers huge exposure, and learning wasn’t confined to the university; there was so much to absorb from Brighton itself.”
Kamali Srinivasan, Architectural and Urban Design MA

“I wanted to study by the seaside, and Brighton is known for being diverse and friendly, which turned out to be true. I felt a strong sense of belonging there.”

A course that transforms perspective

The MAAUD program allows students from various backgrounds to explore urban spaces and develop their design thinking. For some, it became a way to merge personal passions with professional aspirations.

“MAAUD was a great course as it was accessible to people from many disciplines and allowed you to explore your potential and maximize opportunities for developing your career in your field of choice.”
Rafa Grosso Macpherson, Architectural and Urban Design MA

For others, the course provided the clarity they had been searching for:

“I initially wasn’t interested in architecture; I chose the course based on my parents’ suggestion. My true passion had always been psychology and mental health… but I realized I could combine that with architecture to create spaces that promote mental well-being.”

Exploring the potential of urban spaces

Brighton and its surrounding areas served as an extension of the classroom, offering students the opportunity to engage with real-world projects.

“In the first semester, I worked on a proposal for Moulsecoomb station, which was right next to the university. I personally used this station a lot and had my own ideas about what needed to be improved there. Seeing it through an urban design lens was a fascinating experience.”
Kamali Srinivasan, Architectural and Urban Design MA

“I aimed to explore the hidden potentials in locations that transition between urban environments and nature. My vision was to preserve, enhance, and inspire by repurposing neglected sites, encouraging community participation in placemaking, and spreading awareness about wildlife.”

Collaboration and learning from each other

One of the course’s strengths lies in its interactive and collaborative nature, allowing students to engage with peers from diverse academic backgrounds.

“I enjoyed group lectures the most, where we interacted with students from different courses like interior design, sustainable design, and architecture. Working in teams was brilliant, as we complemented each other, much like building a Lego piece.”
Naida Hussien, Architectural and Urban Design MA

“My favorite part of the studies was the weekly workshops, where each of the students would present their progress. We would all have the opportunity to critique, discuss, and contribute to each other’s projects. It was a hugely beneficial way of learning through experience.”

“Sarah Stevens was always very responsive and would try to help as much as possible, giving us useful advice on how to focus and tailor the course and projects to the fields of our liking.”
Rafa Grosso Macpherson, Architectural and Urban Design MA

“Ms. Sarah Stevens played a major role in inspiring me to bring out the best in myself. I would also like to extend my gratitude to every lecturer, especially Mr. Tom, Ms. Sally, and Mr. Ben. Their dedication and passion for teaching have left a lasting impact on my journey.”
