Cave is an installation in which the ‘viewer’ and the ‘viewed’ collide in the silhouetted shadows, both real and painted, that comprise the images on its canvas walls. The piece explores fundamentally conflicting sensations of privacy and exposure; calm and unease; interiority and exteriority; the personal (individual) and public (collective) experience. The intention here is to evoke the inextricable experiences of isolation and collectivity that have been the cornerstone of the COVID-19 pandemic; the paradoxical notion that everybody has been experiencing the same thing, alone, in a time when the individual experience has never felt more individual and yet never been more universal.
