ECOSEW

An innovation into sustainable fashion and community appeal

Education and Sustainability

Education is another major factor that we as a group wanted to focus on with EcoSew. I came across an article from CSF (Centre of Sustainable Fashion) who look to educate (at a variety of levels) to help kickstart change in societies, economies and cultures.

Another article also suggested that ‘education for sustainable development promotes the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding of the actions required to create a sustainable world.’

These sources highlight the importance of education as a way of tackling the problem at the heart of it. We can educate our younger generations to be aware of the best sustainable practices that will in turn hopefully emphasise the importance of taking care off our planet, rather than instilling this ‘throw-away’ mindset. As for older generations we also think that this is an important factor to consider, however, could potentially be harder to achieve as consumer behaviours could be more difficult to change in older generations. This is something as a group that we need to consider as our project progresses.

As a group we wanted to emphasise the importance of education to not only help the ‘consumer’ to grow but also so that they can understand the importance of sustainable practices going forward. With Ecosew, we want to provide workshops and opportunities for people to learn skills such as sewing, mending etc. to make it more likely for them to mend and remake clothes rather than just throwing them away.
