On the day of my menswear shoot it got dark quite quickly and I was unable to take as many experimental photographs as I would’ve wanted too, however these are my two favourite outcomes of the day. I really like both of these images, however feel the first one may be slightly corny and safe. However in the second image I like how the bag dresses down the smart jacket. I feel that the way in which the photograph has been cropped is also interesting as the ring which the model wears leaves the audience to decide the gender of the model.

Inspired by Jared Beck I plan to take my next shoot to be set in a forest. I like how the autumn browns compliment what the model has been styled in. His pose is casual and relaxed. Like my last shoot of my sister, I am going to experiment with shots of with the model laughing as well as photos with serious expressions like the ones above.

This second image of a outfit from the Tom Ford 2015 fall collection has inspired my styling, and I would like to create a similar smart outfit for my next model with a grey and white male coat which is available to me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this shoot and these are the photos which I am most pleased with yet. I feel like I have portrayed my cheeky and cheery sisters personality well through the images having been inspired by the works of Corrine Day and Terry Richardson. This shoot took place in my bedroom as I wanted the background to be simple and not draw any attention of the subject. I am pleased with the shots where the light shining through my blinds as it gives the photos greater depth and life. I also feel the natural light reflects well on the models face, highlighting her smiling features and freckles well.

After bright colours being such a influencial aspect to my last shoot I want my next one to be in a black and white colour scheme. The first image that has inspired me is one taken of young Kate Moss by Corrine Day. The photos from this shoot by Day are iconic and set of Moss’s career aged 15. The innocence that is portrayed through Moss has influenced me to use my 15 year old little sister as my next model. I love how the photo looks relaxed as her nose is scrunched up with laughter and this expression is something which I hope to recreate.

The next photographer which I looked at it is Terry Richardson. Richardson is well known for taking portraits of a list of celebrities purely in-front of a white drop back. I particularly like this shoot he has done on Cara Delivinge, due to the silly and playful faces she is pulling for the camera. The photos are cheeky and fun. The plain background enforces attention on the models expression even more.

These are the final eight edited images from my pattern on pattern shoot. They were taken in everyday locations around Moulscoomb, but I particularly focused on shooting against the red post box and bench on the bus stop to co-ordinate with the orange and red elements in the jumper, skirt and shoes which I styled the model in. I overlayed the photographs with a green tone filter firstly to create a vintage look and secondly as red is complimenting colours on the wheel with green, therefore aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

For my first shoot I have been inspired by this shoot of Bella Hadid by Dan Martensen for US Elle February 2016. Martensen does portfolio, advertising and portrait photography. I particularly like this shoot for the location, the streets of America and public transport are relatable and realistic for the audience to connect too. The contrast of her statement red coloured clothing against the dull grey tone background is eye catching and gives a touch of glamour. I plan to use the contrast of red against grey tones colour scheme in my photography for this shoot.  Hadid creates a mysterious atmosphere as she casually leans against the car, advertisement and train post.

I have also been inspired by one of the twentieth centuries best known fashion photographers, Norman Parkinson, who has been said to have “reinvented the fashion shoot”. I have found this photograph of a model in front of a passing bus, found in British Vogue 1960 particularly well composed. I love the blurred London bus in the background as I feel it brings the photograph to life, giving the impression it’s taking place right in front of your eyes. The black, white and red elements compliment each other creating a strong and clean contrast in colours and vertical and horizontal lines draw your eyes across all elements of the photograph. The model looks composed and sophisticated propped up against the traffic post similar to how Hadid holds herself in Martensen’s shoot.

Even though neither of these photographers have focused on pattern in these shoots, I am going to incorporate inspiration from elements of their work with some research from the African Exhibition show, and my independent research into pattern from the 60’s in my final shoot.

Today I visited the exhibition “Fashion Cities Africa” at Brighton Museum. It’s the first major exhibition in the UK focusing on contemporary African fashion and presents very diverse styles, from couture to street. It focused on fashion in the popular cities, Casablanca in Morocco, Lagos in Nigeria, Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa. I was most interested in the range of different wax prints on some of the clothing and the way the outfits are pattern on pattern.

I was also inspired by this image by Velma Rossa and Papa Petit. They created this unique
look by using reclaimed clothes from the City’ lively “mitumba” (second-hand clothing) industry. Although the colours and patterns don’t match they look individual and quirky.

In contrast to the second hand wax print clothes which I liked, the “Fucshia lame dress with sequin embroidery” created in 2015 by Lanre da Silva Ajayi was my favourite piece in the exhibition. I love the way the material softly hangs and how you can see sections of the pattern in each pleat.

After looking around the exhibition Eva and I then played around with second hand clothes which were available there for us to try on and recreated our take on African Fashion styled on ourselves!

Today we watched the film Valentino – The Last Emperor by Matt Tyrnauer. The documentary followed the life of the legendary fashion designer Valentino. I really enjoyed watching this film and found his passion and precision in his work truly inspiring. It also gave me a greater insight to the problems and reality faced behind the scenes in the fashion industry. We had a first hand insight to the amount of hard work and preparation that goes into shows and events from Valentino and his whole team.
