About

Woad is one of more than 800 tinctorial plants grown all over the world, which produce the colour blue. This plant was historically grown all over Northern Europe and it’s trade once brought great prosperity to the regions of Amiens in Northern France and the South of England during it’s heyday in the middle ages.

Beyond Blue at the University of Brighton is a Faculty of Arts project, which sees staff across the faculty and students on the Fashion and Textiles with Business Studies courses gather around the common themes of Woad and Blue.

Students of fashion design, printed textiles, woven textiles and knitwear will collaborate to produce a range of contemporary textiles and fashion designs in response to their research and investigations of the plant and it’s colour.
