Today we presented our practice media pack. I found today hard as I don’t like speaking Infront of crowds, but I knew our group has a good plan of what we’re doing so I would be fine. For the PowerPoint I created the mock ups of the Instagram and website, I was happy with the outcome and thought it looked fitting on the final PowerPoint. I used my favourite images from our Pinterest to give the audience a good idea of the atheistic we are trying to create for our magazine. To get a better affect I used mockupworld, this is a website that connects to photoshop, and the mock ups look like it’s in a phone or laptop. I think this made the mock ups look much more professional and gives us an idea of how the platforms would look.

After the presentation we had feedback to try practice more before presenting as we didn’t have a script with us. After watching the other groups, I completely agree I found the groups that had notes had a presentation that ran more smoothly.

Although, I think our presentation went very well, I think Jason and Abbie created an amazing PowerPoint that carried our aesthetic all the way throughout. I think from the feedback we now know how we can make our real presentation better and more affective for the real presentation.

In Today’s lecture we started by looking at the magazine Schon. we we’re asked to pick a magazine from the board that we thought could be a competitor for our magazine and analyse it as well as its social media platforms. We decided this magazine look similar to the type of photography and styling we are interested in doing. We found the magazine to be dramatic, cultural and editorial we also noticed it had core colours of black white and beige and if there were bright colours they would be muted down. As well as having a key font throughout the magazines and website. I think their target audience would be a mature audience around 25-35 and in the creative field.

Afterwards we used the rest of our time to use the task to create ideas for our own magazine. We have decided that we definitely want to be creating a tranquil magazine for our audience to use as an escape. We are trying to now find ways to make sure we don’t present an advert on how you should live your life instead of a reason to embrace your surroundings.

Today we went out to do our first photoshoot which we presented to the rest of the class. We wanted to use this time to showcase the aesthetic we are attempting to create. We thought the beach would be the best location as it was close and our current Pinterest board was mostly beach locations. We had Steph model while Jason took the photos, and I did some BTS shots. I think our photos came out amazingly and the shoot went as we planned.

We were planning on doing a shoot with a model in the water for a shoot in the future.

But Steph ended up accidentally getting in the sea so thought we might as well experiment with that idea then. For me reflecting on the shoot I need to be attempting different angels and I want to start researching different ideas for the BTS videos.

When we presented our photos, we were able to explain why we were doing certain things such as the styling and location. our target audience is for millennials, so the clothing had to connect to this and attract our target audience. we were all happy with the feedback and I think this is a positive start to our magazine. Here are some of my favourite photo.

editorial brief

Today we were deconstructing multiple magazines the first magazine we looked at was called Super Super. This magazine was clearly not new, we found it cluttered and a bit overwhelming. Although we didn’t like the aesthetic or the layout, we still got lots of ideas for our own magazine.

  • Cover- Master head- Capital letters – makes the titles appear bolder
  • Cover- Bold contrasting colours (black, white, red, and yellow)
  • Cover- Photography – the main images is made to stand out
  • Target audience- ‘Emo’ Teenagers (15-18)
  • The logo and magazine name are spotted around the magazine
  • Inside- Standfirst- the magazine has many small paragraphs
  • Grids- most of the articles are in colourful boxes- this attracts the reader to look at the article

The second magazine we looked at was VICE, we all really liked the cover and how simple it was, we thought the title being in a silver tint made the cover more exciting rather than just a text. We also loved the inside layout of the magazine; we thought the drop caps were something that would fit in great with our own magazine.

  • Cover- Coverline- vice have not got a coverline- the magazine is able to attract its audience as it is a successful name
  • Inside- drop cap- a lot of the article has drop caps- makes the magazine look clean- tells you where to start reading
  • Grids- the layout is very clean the articles are in two grids and a lot smaller compared to the photography- the grids are similar widths throughout the magazine- they follow a similar pattern throughout the magazine – we think this is something we would want to have in our own magazine

The third magazine was the CR Fashion book 20 prime s/s 2022. I feel that this was my favourite out of all the magazines, I think the size made the magazine stand out and I had never seen a magazine at this scale before (A3). We also liked the title which was a gold tint and thought again it stood out like on the VICE magazine. I thought this size magazine could be very interesting for our own magazine as we are thinking of the magazine being a photography-based magazine so this could be interesting for us as it would present our images amazingly.

My aims for this project

After our lecture I wanted to start getting organised for the new project. I wanted to start planning for what I need to include in this project’s digital sketchbook. After completing first year I found that I struggled most with creating a sketchbook I felt had enough research as well as looking presentable, I wanted to use this project to reflect on this and improve. I want to present my sketchbook on adobe InDesign, by doing this I want to be able to improve my skills on the platform and feel fulfilled when handing in my work. InDesign isn’t an app I have used much, and I have limited experience using it. I am planning on using YouTube and going to any workshops available to make sure I can create a good sketchbook for this project.

editorial brief

Toady was the first day of meeting everyone in my group for our new project. We were able to meet everyone in the group and discuss who was doing each role. We were able to get an idea of the theme and concept we thought would be fitting for our magazine. We were also able to get a clear idea of the aesthetic we wanted to create. I’m really excited to work with this group as I think they are motivated and want to create an inactive magazine.

In our lecture we were analysing different magazines we were making bullet points and short notes of things we picked up from the magazines we looked at. We were looking for different things such as audience segmentations, Competitors, Print and digital, and other small things such as the article types. The first magazine we looked at was ID magazine, we chose to look at this one as we thought it had a similar target audience to who we think we will go for. We also all really liked the photography and layout in the magazine so was drawn to looking at this one. Here are some of the things we noticed in the magazine.

  • 18-24
  • People interested in fashion
  • International- the magazine is mostly photography based- you don’t have to speak English to understand the art
  • The target audience attracts both male and female
  • Marital status – Single
  • Low income – the magazine doesn’t sell products to the reader it is more about art, photography, and inspiration for the reader
  • Occupation- creative job uses magazine for inspiration self-employed (artist, photographer, fashion)
  • social grade classification – upper/middle class- magazine cost £10
  • self-image- artist
  • urban
  • value perception – will value things more

the second magazine we looked at was the magazine I brought in. I chose to bring in a Vogue magazine as I thought it was a well-known magazine. After talking more about our magazine, I think Vogue would be a competitor to us as it has a similar target audience to the audience we were thinking of. Here are the things we noticed in this magazine.

  • 18-30
  • the magazine is product related
  • the layout is like a fashion catalogue so would interest an older audience
  • sold in local supermarkets (Tesco’s, WHSmith) – makes the magazine easier to purchase
  • female orientated
  • marital status – single
  • social grade classification – upper class/middle class – the prices on the products suggest it targets a person who can afford a high-end lifestyle
  • occupation- office job – uses vogue to escape and inspire their fashion
  • self-image- wealthy
  • vogue sells by who is on the cover- a celebrity being on the cover can interest their audience
  • people who have been in vogue are seen as they’ve “made it”- you must be a certain class/ wealth/ celebrity to be and have work in vogue
  • urban/ rural
  • article types- shorts, articles,
  • print and digital- YouTube, Instagram, twitter, TikTok, so on.
