WeValue is the name of an approach for eliciting group values, starting with local expressions, and then developing specific statements that define these values in a given context. They can later become measurable values-based indicators. The approach is usually delivered through workshops by certified facilitators.
Values here refers to ‘principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement about what is important in life’ Oxford English Dictionary definition
WeValue was first developed from the ESDinds Project, an international research project funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme. It has since continued to be developed through ongoing funded research projects and scholarship.
There are several key elements in the approach, and these will be emphasised differently depending on the purpose for using it as well as the nature of the group or organisation.
- Local values elicitation …

- Crystallizing enacted values …
…emphasised for challenging, reconsidering and clarifying local definitions of values, organizational change;

- Developing a local values framework …

organizational change,
and (eventually) monitoring and evaluation;
- Developing locally valid measurable indicators …

design and planning;
- Developing locally valid measures …
…which can provide evidence for monitoring and evaluation,
organisational learning or
new measures for sustainable societies (Beyond GDP)
- Identifying legacies …
…to have new measures of success and a longer-term ‘impact’ (for organisations, projects or partnerships).
