“All university and college teaching to be online unless face-to-face teaching is absolutely essential”.
– SAGE (Sept 2020)
This event aims to link up trade union members across the University of Brighton and organise for a future staff and student assembly. It follows on from an event that was held online by the national UCU Solidarity movement on the 10th of October which called on branches to start establishing local staff-student assemblies.
Our colleagues, students, and communities in and around the University of Brighton are now at the frontline of dealing with the COVID-19 crisis. There have been >100 cases of COVID-19 reported at the University of Brighton. We are on the brink of up to 19 compulsory redundancies in Information Services. University management still refuses to follow the scientific SAGE advice about switching to fully online teaching where possible. There is the possibility of looming industrial action locally in defence of the Information Services jobs and in the context of the broader COVID-19 crisis we need to build a campaign of solidarity to put staff and students before profit.
The COVID-19 crisis is also disproportionately impacting on Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students, as well those with staff and students with disabilities, and also those with additional risk factors.
Come to this meeting with your ideas, to discuss what we can do to raise awareness and support each other.
