A message from Ruth Whittaker, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Students emailed 20 August 2021 to all returning students.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you back for the start of the new academic year.

Life on campus

In advance of receiving your personalised timetables, we wanted to let you have more information about what you can expect in your first semester at the University.

Our libraries and study spaces, including computer suites, sport and fitness facilities and food outlets will all be open for you to use. You’ll also be able to access the full range of study support and wellbeing services, including support in relation to the pandemic. And the University and the Students’ Union are planning a range of in-person and online induction activities for new and returning students over the summer and into your first term. ‘Belong at Brighton’ will help you feel at home and settle back into University life.

Like all universities, we will be following Government guidance and will be monitoring the pandemic very closely with our local Director of Public Health. Should a worsening of the pandemic occur and Public Health advice require us to make changes, we have robust plans in place for students to continue their studies with a blend of in-person and remote learning, supported by additional safety measures on campus.

Teaching and timetables

Your timetables are being developed to maximise the time you will have on campus and to ensure that your University experience will be as productive, sociable, enjoyable and as safe as possible.

Depending on your course, your timetable will include a mix of in-person seminars and tutorials, interactive workshops, studio time, clinical skills sessions or laboratory classes.

This means that you will be able to spend as much time on campus as possible, focussing on in-person interaction and activity.

There’ll also be some online learning, for example, some large group lectures. These will also be available as recordings, so you can watch them at your convenience, at a time that suits you and you’ll be able to watch these again and again to get the most out of them. We hope that this approach will help you get the best out of your time with us, fitting in with your own personal circumstances, and providing the University the flexibility to respond, if needed, to changing public health guidance about Covid.

If your course has a standard autumn term start date, you will get your timetable no later than week commencing Monday 20 September.

If your course begins earlier than the formal start of the autumn term on 27 September, you will hear from your school shortly before your course begins.

In the meantime, we have provided more information about what you can expect in the first semester, this can be found via the My Brighton app. Go to My School and click on Autumn teaching plans to find the information for your course, or search for a uni course in our course finder, then go to the content section and read ‘how this course is delivered’.
