Opening hours over the Christmas break 2023/24

The University will this year close from Thursday 21 December 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024 inclusive. In addition, some buildings will shut down for a longer period.

Under the plan, all University buildings will close over the Christmas period, from Thursday 21 December 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024 inclusive. In addition, some buildings will also close from Saturday 16 December 2023 to Sunday 7 January 2024 inclusive.

All buildings will reopen as normal at the start of the new term on Monday 8 January 2024

Will the libraries be open?

Apart from during the standard Christmas closure from 21 December to 1 January, libraries will remain open, although they will be operating on a special Christmas schedule with some reduced hours. Find out about the Library opening hours and contacts.

Which buildings will be open?

From 16 – 20 December and from 2 to 7 January 2024 inclusively, the following buildings on each of our four campuses will remain open from 8am-6pm:

  • Moulsecoomb: Elm House and Cockcroft (mezzanine)
  • Falmer: Checkland
  • City: Grand Parade
  • Eastbourne: Hillbrow Sports Centre, Greynore and Queenwood.

Some specialist facilities – such as sports facilities, libraries, student halls, conferencing, IT open access, and specialist teaching and research spaces – will remain open as normal. Otherwise, other buildings and spaces will be closed until 8 January 2024.

Where can I get something to eat?

Apart from during the standard Christmas closure from 21 December to 1 January, catering will be offered on each campus, with catering outlets open in each of the core buildings.

What about specialist teaching and research space?

Apart from during the standard Christmas closure from 21 December to 1 January, students and staff will continue to have access to specialist teaching and research space both for timetabled learning and non-timetabled self-directed learning. This includes sport and research facilities, laboratories, studios, medical and technical facilities.

Staying in halls?

Student halls will remain open throughout for those students who have opted to remain in Brighton and Eastbourne. The Student Wellbeing Team has produced a handy guide to the wellbeing support options and activities available over Christmas.
