Updated: UoB bus services

In light of feedback received on services during the first few weeks of term, we can confirm that:

• The revised bus service currently serving Varley Park and Falmer will be extended to provide an hourly service linking all of our Brighton campuses for the remainder of the current academic year
• This service will be free for all Brighton students
• Use of this service will be monitored to assess whether it should be maintained on an ongoing basis
• Options for alternative types of provision for future years will also continue to be explored
• In parallel, the University, in consultation with the SU, will carry on discussions with Brighton & Hove buses on improvements to their services and the prices charged to students

We will also continue to promote other sustainable travel options, including the Brighton Life Cycles bike-hire scheme and car sharing, as well as continuing to push Southern Rail to improve services to all of our campuses.

We are pleased to confirm that some additional ‘University of Brighton – Brighton Shuttle’ bus services have been organised. We are also working with Brighton & Hove Buses to ease the congestion caused by traffic signalling along Lewes Road, and have arranged for three additional 25 buses to run throughout peak periods Monday-Friday.

UOB1 is the new inter-site service between Varley Park and Falmer (circular route) during term-time. As previously announced, the fare will be £1 per journey for students, staff and visitors and is funded by University investment in the service. Buses will be frequent, between 8am and 6.17pm.

Two additional services will now run for the start of term period to support the busy local bus services:

• UoB2 is a ‘morning rush bus service’ that will run from Grand Parade (Bus stop S) through Moulsecoomb to Falmer (circular route) from 2-24 October, Monday to Friday, between 8-10.00am. This service is free of charge on production of a unicard.
• UOB3 is a new night bus service between Varley Park and the Old Steine (one way) that will continue to run until 8 October to help Varley Park residents to enjoy Freshers activities. Two buses per hour at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm. This service is free of charge on production of a unicard.

The University will carry out our own monitoring of the adequacy of bus services on the main routes to and from campuses over the coming weeks so that we can use this information to seek improvements to the services where necessary.
