SEOTY 2014 Winner – Sunny Rangnani

How does it feel to win the Student Employee of the Year award? Sunny explains in his guest blog.

“My name’s Sunny, I’m currently studying Software Engineering0P6A0256  at the Moulsecoomb campus.

I love studying here, I love my course and I love working for the uni. Being part of a professional environment where teachers help students overcome challenges such as bringing an idea to life or working on a niche project is what I truly enjoy. Going to university here has provided me with the ability to work well under pressure, manage my time effectively and most importantly given me valuable experience towards solving problems that I face almost every day in my personal and professional life.

Working at the university actually meant a great deal to me, because it was my first job in professional office environment. It allowed me to interact with key people and be part of the discussions that led to the development of one the university’s database management systems. Most of all, it has given me more confidence.

Last year, my work was recognised; I won Student Employee of the Year! It’s a moment I will never forget, just being nominated made me so happy. I’m currently on placement in Canada and have the picture from the awards framed on my desk; it feels great every time I look at it.

Whilst I’m in Canada, I’m working as the Development & Technical Lead at Adster Creative Inc, a Google partner, as part of my year in industry. I tackle issues that clients may face in building their websites or in general provide support to my lovely account managers.

During my interview for the job, I was asked about my accomplish0P6A0316ments so I spoke about my SEOTY award. The feedback from my now managers, Dave and Andrew, made me feel really good. It’s a very respectable award and part of the reason that I got it was down to my colleagues at the university.

My advice for students is this; work hard but never chase after success. Pursue excellence instead, and success will surely follow.”

Just being nominated for the Student Employee of the Year award can massively boost your employability. Why not ask your manager to nominate you? Find out about the nomination process here.

Former student Dan also won the SEOTY award in 2013, find out how winning has helped him in life after graduating here.
