Being a Student Ambassador

If you’re looking for a job, look no further. The university is recruiting Student Ambassadors (click here for more information) and with good pay, flexible hours and great perks, what’s not to like? Don’t just take it from us, Holly is a final year student and has been working as an ambassador since her first year.

“My name is Holly and I’m studying Applied Social Science. I’m originally from Manchester and decided to come to the University of Brighton for a change of scenery and to branch out. I live and study in Hastings and I’ve loved studying here so much, I’m con11042630_10205809424093038_1829699469_nsidering staying down South once I graduate! I have been a Student Ambassador for two years now and a Social Media Ambassador for one year.

My experience of being an ambassador has been a really positive one right from the start. The role was really appealing to me; casual work to fit around my studies with a competitive salary that is considerably higher than minimum wage. All of this is enhanced by the role being very enjoyable, I’ve had so much fun on everything that I’ve done, whether it’s been a social media campaign, an open day or a uni event. It’s great to work in a really positive, supportive environment with like minded people, there’s a huge group of students at the Hastings campus who work together.

Open days as a Student Ambassador involve welcoming prospective students, giving tours, answering any questions and generally being helpful. I love being able to share my love for the campus and the seaside town so I have some really nice conversations with people. I also go around with an iPad adding prospective students to the campus Facebook group so that if they’ve got any questions, they can get in touch with me easily.

By working at the university and being faced with tasks such as having to start a conversation with someone I don’t know, I’ve become more confident in myself and improved my communication skills.

My managers, Sara and Wendy, have encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and supported me through any difficulties I have faced, for which I am grateful.

All experience gained through being an ambassador has made me realise that most of my insecurity is in my head and sometimes it’s best to ignore that and go for it. Confidence and communication are two main skills that are desired when looking for things like employment so I would definitely encourage anyone who wants might be a bit shy to become an ambassador, it will boost your confidence (and your CV) massively!”

Second year TV Production student Harry also works for the uni, find out what he has to say about his job here.
