Sustainable design graduate, Jesse Mugambi’s journey to building Studio Can-V

Jesse Mugambi’s journey through our Sustainable Design MA  was more than academic—it was transformative. Having previously completed a degree in Architecture BA(Hons) in 2020, Jesse returned for his master’s with a clear goal: to merge his passions for architecture, music, and sustainability into a project that could make a real-world impact.

It was whilst studying his MA, that Jesse won €50,000 in Jägermeister’s global #SaveTheNight competition, which funds innovative nightlife concepts. Jesse spent his time at university developing his winning proposal, Studio Can-V, where he received mentorship, design support, and the freedom to explore interdisciplinary solutions.

Jesse returned to university recently to tell us more about the project, from its initial concept to its recent launch and recognition on the global stage. Watch the video below to hear how the course supported and shaped his journey.

University of Brighton engineering students fly high in national rocketry competition

If you’re considering studying engineering and want hands-on experience that launches your career (literally) then the University of Brighton might just be your launchpad (pun totally intended).

In their first-ever entry into the prestigious UKSEDS National Rocketry Championship, a team of 14 engineering students rocketed to success, finishing 7th out of more than 50 teams from across the UK.

Their high-performance carbon fibre rocket, designed and built entirely by students, soared to an altitude of 1,819 feet and returned safely—an impressive feat for a debut team.

Alexander Gooch, one of the team members, said:

“For our first-year competing, finishing 7th out of over 50 teams is an incredible achievement. We’ve learned so much from building and testing our designs, and it’s been amazing to see all our hard work come to life on launch day. We’re really proud of how far we’ve come and grateful for the support we’ve had.”
