From apprentice to award-winner: How Isaac Wiggers excelled in his degree

Balancing study and work: A winning combination

Isaac is studying our Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) degree apprentice, whilst working at HOP Consulting, a Brighton-based engineering firm known for its involvement in major projects like the Amex Stadium.

He has already completed the taught element of his apprenticeship and is now in the final stage, undertaking his End-Point Assessment (EPA) to receive his full certification. But even before officially finishing, his hard work and dedication earned him recognition as Graduate of the Year at the 2025 Gatwick Diamond Business Awards. This prestigious honor celebrates his ability to seamlessly integrate academic learning with hands-on industry experience.

A Program Designed for Success

Isaac’s achievement is part of the Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology (IoT) initiative, which fosters collaboration between academia and industry leaders. By working closely with industry stakeholders like Gatwick Diamond, the IoT ensures that courses remain relevant and equip students with the skills employers are actively seeking.

Reflecting on his experience, Isaac shared:

“Over the last five years, the apprenticeship program has allowed me to concurrently develop my practical skills and knowledge base as an engineer. The ability to work while learning has been ideal for me, as seeing the direct impact of my studies motivates me to continue to push myself as far as I can. I’m grateful to HOP and the University for providing me this opportunity.”
