University conference invites industry experts to view the educational response and skill preparations to critical challenges faced by the construction industry.
Taking place on Friday 10 January, the event will demonstrate how students from the Built Environment programmes, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), in the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering tackle the critical challenges facing the construction industry – safety, sustainability, and meeting housing demands.
In front of an audience of key stakeholders, CIOB CEO Caroline Gumble and partners from industry and local authorities, students from the Built Environment programme will demonstrate their work followed by an open discussion.
University of Brighton’s Dr Poorang Piroozfar said:
“The Grenfell Tower tragedy exposed the devastating consequences of inadequate building safety measures and a skills gap within the industry which has led to so many poorly performing buildings. As future construction professionals, our students will be part of the solution. The work of the Built Environment programmes at the University of Brighton are, in part, to ensure that these future professionals are equipped with the skills and knowledge to prevent such tragedies and deliver safer, more sustainable buildings while meeting the needs of growing communities.
“In this endeavour, the role of professional, statutory, and regulatory bodies is invaluable, with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) standing out as a proactive and inclusive organisation within the built environment sector. Providing our students with a platform to engage with the industry through the combined support of CIOB and the University is crucial, enabling them to showcase their academic achievements and preparedness to join the industry as agents of change. This interaction fosters continuous innovation and progress, ensuring the sector remains resilient and ready to address future challenges in the UK and globally.”
Architectural Technology student Tim Danson said:
“An event such as this provides an invaluable opportunity to engage with industry leaders, exploring key issues facing the industry and how the knowledge and skills we’re provided with align with the response to those issues. These discussions will be instrumental in preparing me for the challenges and opportunities of my future career while preparing the industry to put those skills to use, particularly as it is working quickly to adapt to climate change, net zero and improving the safety and performance of existing buildings. ”
As well as the CIOB, guests will include the Construction Excellence Sussex Club, Generation 4 Change, Brighton and Hove City Council and education and employment stakeholders.
This event highlights the University of Brighton’s commitment to shaping the future of the built environment. By equipping students with the necessary skills and fostering collaboration across the industry, the university is at the forefront of building a safer, more sustainable, and efficient construction sector.
