We will run a series of workshops and inductions throughout the year for both equipment and facilities, we will update this page every couple of months with more dates. Please note these workshops and inductions are for School of Arts and Media students only. Clicking on the date link will take you to the SISO Find Workshops page.

Darkroom Induction: (Black and White Darkroom Room 241)

*Introduction to black and white printing in the darkroom. Students will need to bring a set of black and white negatives to print from during this workshop. We can lend you a set of negatives for the workshop if necessary but it is better to work from your own images. Photographic paper will be provided for this workshop free of charge. but in future will cost £8.000 for a pack of 10 sheets of resin coated 10×8 paper.

Darkroom 1:1 Tech Tutorial: (Black and White Darkroom Room 241)

* 1:1 hour long tutorial in the black and white darkroom for students who have already completed the full induction only. This is an ideal refresher session for those who need a bit more support after the induction. This session can also be booked for those who want specific support for example to learn a new technique in the darkroom. Students must supply their own photographic paper for this workshop, or you can buy it from the Photo Unit Department on the day, it is £6.50 for 10 sheets of resin coated 10×8 paper.

Cyanotypes (Photographic Service Unit Room 241)

Cyanotype is an ultraviolet light sensitive printing process. It uses a mixture of iron compounds that react when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, and when washed in water will oxidize to create the Prussian Blue image.

Please bring with you any objects / negatives / digital negatives to use in the cyanotype workshop – semi-transparent items work the best petals, lace, feathers etc.

This induction into our photographic studio is required before you can book the space and use it independently. We will cover Health and Safety information and introduce you to using the studio lights and camera equipment. All equipment is provided.

Film & Video: Digital film making & lighting for Moving image

In this workshop you will learn how to use 4K video cameras and light film/video projects in a studio to create high quality, filmic imagery.

Working in a small group we will explore:

Setting lights up & safely working in a studio environment
Different lighting types and how/when to use them
Three point lighting & lighing for effect
An overview of high end video cameras and film making basics
Lighting for green screen

Film & Video: 16mm Film Making

This workshop explores different methods of shooting on film.
We will look at different camera formats including 16mm and Super 8 and explore the time/costs associated with these formats.

We will cover:
– A brief history of artists/film makers shooting on film, including projected film examples.
– Different film types – what do they look like & how are they processed?
– Costs & time scale associated with film – where to buy and develop film?
– An overview of Super 8 film cameras
– In depth instruction in how to use a Bolex 16mm camera
– Using a Sekonic light meter
– Preparing, loading and shooting 16mm black and white film with a Bolex H-16 camera

As a group we will shoot a few minutes of black and white 16mm negative film.
We will hand develop the film ourselves using a chemical process in PVU photographic darkroom.
At a later date there will be the opportunity to load the film into a 16mm projector and view/digitise the rushes.

After you have completed the workshop you will be able to book 16mm cameras and projectors via SISO.

Please note that including breaks this is an all day workshop – usually finishing around 4-5pm.

Shooting a Movie with a Bolex 16Mm Film Camera

Film & Video: 16mm Direct Animation Workshop

This workshop will explore ways of creating (direct) animation using 16mm film stock.
We will create painted film animation loops as well as scratching into & altering existing film stock.

We will cover:

A brief history of direct animation
Different film stocks, methods and approaches to creating direct animation
Using paint and other materials to create animated loops on 16mm film
Splicing 16mm film
Loading a 16mm projector and creating film loops in the space

Film & Video: Audio Recording

This workshop will give you an overview of how to successfully record audio for various types of projects.
We will look at different microphone types, recording interviews and location sound as well as sync recording for film projects.

We will cover how to use a Zoom recorder and microphones to record high quality audio.
During the workshop you will work individually or in small groups to record location sounds.

Film & Video: Stop Motion Animation

During this introduction to stop motion you will learn how to:

– Create an animation set using a DSLR and Dragonframe software.
– Set up lighting
– Use Dragonframe software to create simple animation
– Play back and export a short animation

Please note that due to space restrictions this workshop is limited to 4 people – however do get in touch if you’d like an introduction to stop motion outside of the workshop.

Advanced Studio Lighting: (Photo Studio Room 203 )

This advanced lighting workshop in Photographic Studio 203 will discuss the ways lighting with studio flash, on camera flash and daylight can be used to create professional looking shots.  An existing Studio Induction is needed before booking this workshop. All equipment will be provided but students are invited to bring their own cameras along to the session.

Film Processing (Black and White Darkroom Room 241)

In this workshop you will learn how to process a 35mm or 120 black and white film. First you will load the film into a light tight tank in total darkness. Then we will develop the film in a 3 stage chemical process – developer, stop and fix. The film will then be washed and left to dry. All chemistry is provided.

Please bring an exposed Black & White film (a film that has gone through a camera) to develop for this workshop. We cannot process black and white films that are marked with C41.

Manual SLR Camera Induction: (Photo Studio Room 203)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Induction to using a Nikon 35mm SLR manual camera- students must provide their own 35mm film if they want to practice loading a film and take the camera away with them after the workshop. Cameras can be booked and loaned out straight after the workshop if students wish to shoot their film straight away (camera equipment to be booked via SISO in advance).

Introduction to using a DSLR camera: (Photo Studio Room 203)

Learn how to use your camera so that you control the camera to make your pictures rather than simply let the camera take them for you.

This session will look at how to set-up your DSLR camera  in Manual mode including setting your ISO, white balance, aperture, shutter speed and what difference these changes can make to the way your images look. Nikon DSLRs will be available to use for the workshop but students are welcome to bring their own cameras if they have manual settings.

photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. The usual result is a negative shadow image that shows variations in tone that depends upon the transparency of the objects used. Areas of the paper that have received no light appear white; those exposed through transparent or semi-transparent objects appear greyThe technique is sometimes called cameraless photography.

1:1 Scanning Induction: (Photographic Service Unit Room 241)

This induction teaches you how to scan negatives or slide film on the Epson flatbed scanner to create high resolution digital files. Please bring a set of your own negatives and a USB stick or external hard drive to save your images onto at the end of the session. You can scan negatives at 35mm, 120 or 5×4 sizes as well as slide film.
