Bircher recipe
Lately I’ve been making bircher, it’s cheap and gives me a good start to the day. I find it fun to make too. Here’s how I make mine.
Ingredients
- An apple
- Oats
- Mixed dried fruit / seeds / any extras
- Plant-based milk alternative
Equipment
- Spoon for mixing
- Grater
- Tub/cup to put the bircher in – with an air-tight lid
- Refrigerator
Preparation time
- Five-ten minutes, however you will need to wait at least two hours before eating
Step 1 – grate the apple (with or without the peel).
Step 2 – put the grated apple in a container and start mixing it with oats and the plant-based milk alternative, keep topping up until you have the consistency to your liking (a 50/50 ratio of oats to the plant-based milk alternative is a good starting point).
Step 3 – add any extras and mix in (dried fruit and seeds are the usual, but you can also add honey, agave nectar or try your own ingredients).
Step 4 – put the lid on your container (it needs to be air-tight).
Step 5 – put the container in your refrigerator and leave for at least two hours (for better results, leave overnight).
Step 6 – when ready, open the bircher and give it a stir.
Step 7 – serve as required.
NB/ I make enough for three days worth of portions. It tastes just as good on the second and third days.
