February 2010 – Fund raising – where’s the money coming from?

The building work is coming on well but so far almost all the money has been raised by the Swedish group. Funds for the purchase of the land, the retaining wall and foundations have been donated from Sweden. Richard Reardon got the ball going with the sponsored half marathon and PGCE student Lainey O’Connor has raised £225. She has celebrated her birthday and instead of buying her presents she asked friends to make contributions towards a raffle. This is a wonderful idea and she has a great birthday party. However, we need more funds….

University students and friends
So students Siobhan Broome, Rose Bunting and friends raise £150 by reading and acting Himalayan stories at the Book Nook Children’s Book Shop in Hove. This is a delightful morning – they act out a story, there is face painting and their efforts are really appreciated by the children and their parents.

Vikki Foster and her mum organise a super Quiz Night in Horam where students and local residents lock horns in a ‘battle of the brains’. I read the questions and this is my first time as a ‘quiz master’ but what a great evening. Delicious food is provided, there is a wonderful atmosphere and £585 is raised!!

At University group 1E2 make a collection and 1P3 organise a cake sale. The furniture from the old building is sold and the money collected is donated to the Malagiri Project. A personal friend, Maxine Toff, holds a ‘bring a cake’ afternoon. Denise, my wife, gives a talk about the school and people are very generous with donations whilst also enjoying each other’s company and some delicious cake.blog7_february-marathon

Marathon kindness
Students Amy Good, Emily London and Craig Turnbull run the Sussex Beacon Half marathon and on a very wet, windy and wild February they run their hearts out and raise a staggering amount of money. Inspired by the project, Maria Morris decides to run the Fleet Half Marathon. Emmeline Frame undertakes a sponsored walk and altogether these amazing five students raise an incredible £3,800 for the school. I am so touched and moved by the generosity of students, staff and friends.
