Glyndebourne opera performance for schools

Trainee teachers studying our (Secondary) Art and Design PGCE and (Secondary) Modern foreign Languages PGCE recently attended Glyndebourne Opera House for their performance for schools opera of La Boheme.

The School of Education has worked in Partnership with the education team at Glyndebourne Opera for several years, and this performance followed our recent collaborative performance workshop attended by trainees.

On the day, trainees were able to connect their own learning of opera and performance art with the narrative told through the opera performance. For many trainees, this was their first experience of watching an opera and La Boheme is a powerful storyline to start with. It was exciting to witness their powerful, emotive experience with the art form.

Trainees were also able to gain insight into how schools work with outside agencies to offer educational experiences for their pupils. The education department at Glyndebourne works hard to build up working partnerships with local schools. We sat alongside many local schools that had brought pupils from primary and secondary schools to experience the opera.

Many of our trainees fed back on how great the atmosphere was in the whole audience, as children of all ages gave genuine and spontaneous responses to what they were observing.

One trainee responded, “‘This was a fantastic opportunity to experience something completely new, I have gained an insight into a new world and I am excited to explore the world of opera further in the future”.

This visit is part of many enrichment activities organised with Glyndebourne as part of our annual partnership  This will continue in February when the artist in residency opportunities at Glyndebourne are opened up to our trainees.
