Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing is an engaging teaching framework developed by Pie Corbett, supported by Julia Strong. It is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally, before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version.

Talk for Writing provide free online resources including an overview of the process, case studies and resources to use in the classroom.

MCM Learning

Mark McCaughan provides free online resources on spelling, grammar, writing and talking.

WAGOLL

At Literacy WAGOLL (What a Good one Looks Like) you can download a wide range of fiction and non fictions texts to use in the classroom.

Centre for Literacy in Primary Education Resources
The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education is a charity working with all those involved in teaching literacy in primary schools. Their work raises the achievement of children by helping schools to teach literacy more effectively and showing teachers how quality children’s literature can be placed at the heart of all learning (CLPE, 2018).

The CLPE CoreBooks resource offers free resources with texts from a range of perspectives.

CLPE also provide a range of free resources including poet and author videos for EYFS to Key Stage 3 to support planning and progression.

The UK Literacy Association provides resources, CPD, research and booklists for English teachers.

MATHEMATICS

  • Mathematics Guidance: Key Stage 1 and 2

In June 2020 the DfE produced non-statutory guidance that identifies the most important conceptual knowledge and understanding that pupils need as they progress from year 1 to year 6. The publication summarises the most important knowledge and understanding within each year group, referred to as ready-to-progress criteria, and important connections between these mathematical topics. There are publications for each year group which provides:

  • teaching guidance for each ready-to-progress criterion, including core mathematical representations, language structures and discussion of connections to other criteria
  • example assessment questions for each ready-to-progress criterion
  • guidance on the development of calculation and fluency
  • National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics –NCETM

This is an organisation that aims to raise levels of achievement in maths and to increase appreciation of the power and wonder of maths. It is a free to join and you will have access to a range of resources including materials to support mastery. These resources help teachers plans lessons and assess pupils’ understanding, together with marking and calculation guidance.

  • White Rose Maths

The White Rose team aim to build a whole new culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths in order to produce strong, secure learning and real progress. They provide a wide range of downloadable maths resources to support planning and assessment to help teachers and learners achieve excellence.

  • Maths No Problem

Maths No Problem is a series of textbooks and workbooks written to meet the requirements of the 2014 English national curriculum. On their web site you will find clear explanations and videos about the Maths Mastery approach, Singapore Maths, Bar Modelling and the importance of using the CPA approach.

  • Calculation Strategies

The maths team have created a number of screen casts to support your subject knowledge and understanding of the structures of calculation and a range of mental calculation strategies. Remember that it is important that you read your school’s Maths Policy and Calculation Policy to ensure that there is consistency of teaching.

Stem Learning primary science resource packages provide a useful starting point for you to plan and deliver science lessons. Resources are organised into topic area and year group and highlight common misconceptions and offer further suggestions for use in class.

This is a subscription science scheme which provides resources to support teaching science in school including many free resources for use in class.

  • Association for Science Education

The ASE is dedicated to supporting excellence in science teaching and learning and provides resources and  guidance on a range of subjects including outdoor learning and safety in the classroom under the “educational research” heading.

  • Explorify

Find creative science resources here designed to get children critically thinking like scientists. Free to sign up and organised under year group and science topics.

ART

  • Art at Gomersal Primary school

Read how specialist art teacher Mandy Barrett at a primary school in West Yorkshire has developed the teaching of art in her school. The article includes links to many projects across all year groups which will support planning.

  • The National Association for Art and Design in Education

The NSEAD promote art, craft and design education. Their website has a range of free resources to support planning and subject knowledge.

Access Art have a wide range of visual arts resources which help inspire teaching, learning and practice.

The Historical Association provides free resources and curriculum and planning guidance for primary teachers.


GEOGRAPHY

  • Royal Geographical Society

The RGS provides guidance and support in developing high quality primary geography teaching and has resources to support field work in KS1 and KS2.

The Geographical Association provides teaching resources and guidance for primary teachers.

COMPUTING

  • Code.org

This is nonprofit organisation dedicated to expanding access to computer science in schools, Code.org’s vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer science, just like biology, chemistry or algebra. They also organise the annual Hour of Code campaign and are supported by donors including Amazon, Facebook and Google.

PE

  • The PE Shed

This website provides many free resources designed to make Physical Education teaching simple, fun and engaging.

  • School Sport and Activity Action Plan

The government has developed an action plan which outlines a range of new measures to strengthen the role of sport within a young person’s daily routine and explains how teachers and parents can play their part. It promotes a joined-up approach to physical activity and mental well-being, starting in September 2020.

  • afPE

The Association for PE  develops physical education related policy, provides resources and promotes the subject in a variety of forums. Their website also includes Coronavirus guidance and support.

MUSIC

  • The ISM Trust

The ISM trust was created in 2014 to advance education, the arts and to promote health. They have commissioned a practical toolkit to help primary teachers spread the magic of music through their curriculum.

  • Music Mark

Music Mark support quality education for all children and young people. They have provided a selection of home learning resources for EYFS and primary teachers.

  • BBC Primary Music

These wide range of resources provide opportunities to sing, take part in music activities, appraise music and have suggestions for composition included in the Teacher’s Notes.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

  • The Design and Technology Association

This association supports planning by explaining how DT education involves two important elements – learning about the designed and made world and how things work, and learning to design and make functional products for particular purposes and users. It describes how projects can be planned using three core activities and provides some free resources to support teaching DT in the classroom.

PHSE

  • Relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education

The new curriculum will be compulsory from September 2020. All the guidance and resources are available on this government website. An article from Discovery Education by RSE consultant Rebecca Jennings, describes how the new curriculum will help children to learn to respect society’s diversity and to know that love, care and support characterises a family.

  • PHSE Association

On this website you will find advice to support you deliver effective PHSE lessons and a resource library which includes guidance and lesson plans on teaching about mental health and emotional well-being

  • LGBT

  • Light Bulb Languages

Light Bulb Languages is a site with many language resources suitable for teaching languages to primary pupils.

RE

  • RE:Online

You will find free resources sorted under headings of religion, theme, key stage and type of resources.

  • NATRE

The National Association of Teachers of Religious Education supports RE teachers in all education settings. They provide resources and curriculum guidance  into the practice of RE in primary schools.
