Hear Brighton / V&A Research Exchange Fellow Rachel Maloney discuss her project ‘The Matriarchive’ in this lunchtime research seminar hosted by the V&A

13:00-14:00 BST, Tuesday 22 June 2021
Rachel Maloney (University of Brighton / V&A Research Exchange Fellow)
The Matriarchive: negotiating a practice-led research project in lockdown

In October 2019 Rachel began a Research Fellowship in partnership with the University of Brighton and the V&A Research Institute (VARI). The project was paused during the pandemic and restarted in January 2021 with an end date of June 2021. Her proposal for the fellowship outlined a practice-led research project entitled ‘looking for the matriarchive.’ This project aimed to investigate and re-frame the female narrative of domestic photographic materials from the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) collection held in the V&A archives, in the hope of uncovering the often-marginalised memories and experiences of women in the home.

This talk will share the progress and outputs of Rachel’s Research Fellowship with VARI now that it is in its final stages, including the ways in which the project had to be adapted due to the pandemic. Navigating ways to keep the research project moving forward without access to the V&A materials and facilities led Rachel on a journey to explore her own family collections in connection with those of her research participants, changing the trajectory of the project and its outputs in unexpected ways.

Rachel will also outline the next steps for the project as her time with the V&A comes to an end, including work currently being produced for a gallery exhibition in September at the University of Brighton.
