The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Design has been chosen by Choice, the publication of the American Library Association, as one of their outstanding academic titles of 2016. The Encyclopedia, for which IDH-affiliated researcher Dr Harriet Atkinson was one of six section editors working with Professor Clive Edwards (Loughborough University), provides peer-reviewed entries on design from 1800 to the present day, with global coverage by leading international design scholars and design historians.  Entries are on key topics in the history and theory of design, addressing a range of design forms including graphic, textile, furniture, metal, ceramic, fashion, stage and film, vehicle and product design, as well as national histories of design and key design movements.

Harriet Atkinson was responsible for commissioning all entries related to the dissemination of design ideas and methods: through museums and exhibitions, art and design schools, journals and department stores, among other means. She commissioned around three hundred entries from international historians (from Australia, to Japan, to India and the USA).  She also wrote a number of entries reflecting her particular research interests in exhibition design and design theory. Professor Jeremy Aynsley and Professor Cheryl Buckley, who lead the IDH research cluster were both members of the project steering group.  Jeremy Aynsley also authored a number of entries in his areas of expertise, along with other Brighton researchers: lecturers Dr Jane Hattrick, Dr Yunah Lee, Dr Marie McLoughlin and Ness Wood and PhD student Elli Michaela Young.

Every year Choice publishes a list of Outstanding Academic Titles that were reviewed during the previous calendar year. This prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extraordinary recognition of the academic library community.
